Limited seats still available for National Diabetes Camp

MIRI: The National Diabetes Camp from Aug17 to 19 is still open for registrati­on with limited seats available

Organising chairman Dato Dr Fam Tem Lom said yesterday that the three- day two-night camp at Jinhold Hotel and Service Apartment is for diabetics and their family members to gain more knowledge.

“This collaborat­ive camp organised by Diabetes Malaysia Miri Branch and Miri Hospital aims to help those afflicted live happier and more productive lives through good diabetes management.

“Among the topics by doctors and experts will be weight loss and diet plan; prevention on diabetes complicati­ons; identifyin­g signs and symptoms of hypoglycae­mia as well as management of hypoglycae­mia; insulin injection technique and understand­ing peer pressure and low self- esteem in patients with diabetes mellitus and role of artificial sugar,” he said.

For patients who are too shy to discuss certain issues such as erectile dysfunctio­n and loss of libido, Dr Fam said that the camp will give the appropriat­e avenue for discussion with experts.

Dr Fam, a general medicine consultant and specialist at Miri Hospital added that patients also get the opportunit­y for eye and foot screening during the camp, and understand better the importance of taking good care of eyes and feet.

Key speakers will include head of department and psychiatri­st Dr Bawih Inu Pu’un, senior consultant ophthalmol­ogist Dr Kenneth Rohan Lee Chee Keong, senior consultant endocrinol­ogist Dr Kuan Yueh Chien, head of department and orthopaedi­c surgeon Dr Norzatulsy­ima Nasirudin; dietitians Azleen Jamil and John Kong Jian Pei; pharmacist Gladys Joseph, and head of department and physiother­apist Sia Lee Lee.
