Kuching Petanque Double Open on Aug 4-5
KUCHING: The Petanque Sports Association of Kuching ( PSPBK) is organising the Kuching Petanque Double Open ( 11th Series) tournament at Santubong Petanque Complex in Kampung Santubong from Aug 4 to 5.
PSPBK chairman Zaidi Mahdi said the event, organised in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of the Sarawak Land and Survey Department, is expected to attract 150 teams from Sarawak, Sabah, and West Malaysia.
“Almost 15 0 teams have confirmed their participation and we are hoping by the closing date on Aug 3, we shall have our targeted number of teams.
“Thi s i s inde ed a ver y encouraging response to the tournament. For the record, 217 teams took part in this tournament last year,” he told a press conference at LEA Sports Centre at Sarawak Plaza Shopping Complex yesterday.
Zaidi, who is the director of the Sarawak Land and Survey Department and its Social and Recreational Club president, said the competition is divided into two categories, namely the men’s doubles and women’s doubles.
“This year, we are offering a total prize money of RM21,880 to the winners.
“The men’s doubles champions will receive RM6000, first runnersup RM3,000, third RM2,000, fourth RM1,000 while the fifth to eighth placed team will each receive RM500, and ninth to 16th placing will get RM200 each,” he said.
As for the women’s doubles champions, they will receive RM2,500 while first runners up RM1,500, third RM800 and fourth RM400. Those finishing in fifth to eighth place will each get RM200 while the ninth to 16th finisher will each receive RM100.
Entry fees for the men’s doubles is RM100 per team and RM60 per team for the women’s doubles.

“In the Sukma Perlis in 2014, all the state team players came from Kuching and they won three gold, one silver and two bronzes for the Sarawak Sukma Contingent.
“At the last Sukma in Sarawak two years ago, our players captured one gold, one silver and one bronze medals,” added Zaidi.
Ac c ord i n g t o h im, the tournament had not only contributed to the development of petanque in Sarawak by producing international level players, but also benefited the tourism industry and social economy of the local people.
“I would like to extend my appreciation to LEA Sports Centre especially its managing director Raymond Sim Hee Pang for the sponsorship, organising committee members from PSPBK, Masjid Nurir Rahmani Kampung Santubong and LANDAS for their support. It is hoped that this collaboration will help further popularise and develop petanque in Sarawak,” he said.
Zaidi later received the sponsorship from Sim and LEA Spor ts Centre senior merchandising manager Alice Kho, witnessed by Sarawak Land and Survey Department deputy director Abdullah Julaihi, senior valuer Alfian Bawi and PSPBK deputy president Jefri Nawi.
