SIBU: Students of SMK Tiong Hin are urged to be actively involved in sports as it can help in characterbuilding.

School board chairman Philip Lau King Kah said sports and physical activities would lead to a balanced mental and physical growth.

“It helps build good character like honesty, patience, teamwork and leadership, and improve selfdiscipline,” he said at the school’s annual sports meet.

Lau said engagement in sports also teaches the students to be hard working, persevering and ready to grasp opportunities.

“Sports also help improve sel f- esteem, especial ly for those who may not be good academically.”

According to him, the US Department of Health and Human Services has reported that students who play sports tend to perform better in school.

“There are also studies which show that students who play sports are less likely to smoke or get engaged in drug abuse. A healthy mind and healthy body ensure a healthy lifestyle,” he said.

Lau noted that the growing popularity of the digital technology has made children physically inactive.

“Advancement of technology should not be a reason for the people to become less active physically,” he added.

Lau said the society has become more aware of the importance of sports and physical activities in recent years.
