Team HKH lift S’wak World Amateur Golf crown

KUCHING: Team HKH emerged as overall champions in the inaugural Sarawak World Amateur Golf Championsh­ip which ended at Damai Gol f and Country Club ( DGCC) on Thursday.

The team, led by Hoan Kee Hock and represente­d by Lau Ching Leong and brothers, Lee Ka Tung and Lee Kah Ming, scored a three- day total gross score of 698 strokes to beat PGABS Presiden team into second placing with 44 strokes adrift while team Jebon came in third placing with a score of 790 strokes.

Ka Tung was also the toast of team HKH after he won the individual best gross title with the score of 226 strokes.

In the Nett category, team PATRO which was represente­d by youngsters namely Anson Yeo, Saxen Hii, Benjamin Ethan and Mohd Hadif Fathely emerged champion with a total three- day score of 656 strokes.

Anson Yeo who is only 12 years old stole the limelight at the prize presentati­on ceremony after he won the individual best nett score of the tournament with 214 strokes.

Finishing second in the team’s Nett category with a score of 663 were team DGCC which was represente­d by Mohd Lokman Mustaffa, Daniel Yeo, Waili Abang and Awang Sani Seruji while team Tee Off Club came in third placing with a score of 672.

The winners received their prizes from Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah and general manager of Sarawak Economic Developmen­t Corporatio­n ( SEDC) Soedirman Aini during the closing and prize presentati­on held at Poolside of Grand Margherita Hotel on Thursday night.

During his speech, Karim commended SEDC and DGCC for organi sing t he t h ree - day tournament which was participat­ed by 15 teams from throughout Sarawak, and Kedah and Brunei.

According to him, the organisers should try to att ract more participan­ts from overseas in order to promote Sarawak as one of the popular golf destinatio­ns in this region so that the local tourism industry can reap the benefits.

Meanwhile, plans to better improve the facilities at DGCC are underway including improvemen­t works on the course conditions, the club’s cafeteria and the buggy facilities which will be increased to another 40 units in the near future.

Thi s was announc ed by Soedirman in his speech which also mentioned the successful staging of the recent Sarawak Championsh­ip at DGGC as part of this year’s Asian Tour golf calendar whereby 150 profession­al golfers from all over the world had participat­ed in the event held on July 4 to 7.
