Nepal urged to reconsider decision barring their workers from Malaysia

-

IPOH: The Malaysian government hopes the Nepalese government would reconsider its decision to bar their workers from coming to this country to work.

Human Resources Minister M Kula Segaran said the decision would bring major effects in getting foreign workers besides affecting some sectors in the country.

“It is very regretful, I learned today that Nepal has suspended sending foreign workers to Malaysia.

“As you know Malaysia has a lot of industries and plantation sector that are very dependent on foreign workers,” he told reporters after closing the national level Occupational Safety and Health Week 2018 here yesterday.

Kula Segaran added that the government would try to facilitate and ensure that all foreign workers would have their documents processed using the government to government (G-TO-G) system.

Elaborating further, Kula Segaran said he would take the matter to the Cabinet for necessary approval besides planning a working visit to Nepal to address the issue.

“Last Tuesday, the Nepalese embassy and my ministry set down to iron out many of the matters that can be agreed and mechanism to work on these issues.

“I will contact the high commissioner (Nepal) this Monday and see what can I can do because it will affect our countries,” he said.

Earlier, it was reported the government of Nepal has barred its workers from coming to Malaysia with immediate effect.

The move came about as the Nepalese government expressed its unhappiness with the “restrictive” immigration requirements its workers faced before they can be gainfully employed in the country.

This includes having to go through a private company for security and medical check-ups as part of the visa requirement.
