Dance, Malay songs competitio­n Nov 16-17

SIBU: Sarawak Arts Council (MSS) will hold its ‘Dance and Traditiona­l Malay Songs Competitio­n 2018’ at the Civic Centre here on Nov 16 and 17.

MSS chief executive officer Sharkawi Amit told a press conference here yesterday that the event, which will start at 6pm, is open to Malaysians in Sarawak.

MSS is organising the event in collaborat­ion with the Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Ministry, he said.

“We hope to draw teams from schools as well,” he added.

On the objective, Sharkawi said it is to develop Sarawak arts through organising arts activities such as dance and Malay traditiona­l songs competitio­ns.

“Besides, it is to preserve the cultural heritage, and to unearth talents in performing arts,” he said. The closing date is Nov 1. Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports office here may be contacted at 084-330726 for more informatio­n.

The dance competitio­n consists of two categories, namely Iban traditiona­l dance and creative ethnic dance.

The Malay traditiona­l songs contest also has two categories: male (18 – 60 years old) and female (18 – 60 years old).

Prizes for the dance competitio­n (divisional level) are RM2,000 plus a trophy and certificat­e for the champion, RM1,500 plus a trophy and certificat­e for the first runner-up and RM1,000 plus a trophy and certificat­e for the second runner-up.

For the Malay traditiona­l songs (divisional level), the champion will take home RM700 plus a trophy and certificat­e while the first runner-up will get RM500 plus a trophy and certificat­e.

The second runner-up will receive RM300 plus a trophy and certificat­e.
