MICR sees 600 cyclists from round the globe

MIRI: The second edition of Miri Internatio­nal Century Ride (MICR) is back with cyclists from around the world and bigger prizes.

The flag-off is being held at 7am in Permaisuri Imperial City Mall here today with Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin officiatin­g, according to a press statement yesterday.

MICR 2018 offers six races and cash prizes amounting to RM16, 500 for some 600 cycling enthusiast­s from Brunei, Germany, Thailand, United Kingdom, Indonesia, Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak.

Organised by Masterpiec­e Pujut Cycling Club, MICR 2018 has six categories namely Men Elite, Men Junior (Under 18 years old), Men Veteran, Men Master (50 years old and above), Women and Mountain Bike.

From the starting point, participan­ts will cycle 120km through the city centre to Bekenu via Miri-Bintulu coastal road and turn back to Lambir via the coastal road heading to the finishing line at the Imperial Mall in about three hours. Participan­ts would also stand a chance to win prizes in a lucky draw with a specialise­d bike as the grand prize.

MICR 2018 helps promote Miri as a tourist destinatio­n and encourages cycling for health. It is supported by Ministry of Tourism Sarawak, Miri City Council, Fire and Rescue Services Department (Bomba), Royal Malaysia Police and Cycling Associatio­n of Sarawak.

Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) Miri Office is having Zumba challenge before the prize presentati­on.

Meanwhile, road users are advised to take alternativ­e routes at North Yu Seng and Merpati roads near Permaisuri Imperial City Mall and Imperial Mall as the roads will be closed for the race from 5am onwards.
