Give teachers space to do their job — Miri MP
MIRI: The Education Department should allow teachers more power and space in executing their responsibilities as educators as they know best what their students need.
In saying this, Miri MP Dr Michael Teo said the department should stay within its responsibilities of monitoring and ensuring policies implemented by the Ministry of Education are properly executed.
“I am sure teachers know their responsibilities and what they have to do in the course of carrying out their job. They are the ones who engage with their students every day.

of teachers and be more understanding,” he said when officiating at a dinner held in conjunction with the divisionlevel Teachers Day celebration here on Saturday.
As for teachers, Dr Teo said he hoped they could be more passionate about their profession and engage with their students more often. He said each student learns at a different pace. Hence it is important to understand their needs and enable them to grow as students.
Among those present at the dinner were Miri education officer Shirini Mastura Mohammed Zulkifli, Miri Teachers Training Institute director Ngumbang Pura, Miri Nazir and Quality Assurance head Dr Ong Ewe Gnoh, Miri assistant education officer Alias Ngah, Miri Division Principals Council chairperson Koh Chee Kiat, Miri Division Headmasters Council chairperson Choo Chong Lok, and Bank Islam Miri branch manager Kamarulzaman Fadhil.
The dinner also saw the presentation of ‘ Tokoh Guru’ award to Riam Road Secondary School chief executive officer Dr Fong Onn Min in recognition of his contribution to the community through his role in education over the past five decades.
