Body of fisherman found off Kuala Sibuti coast

-

MIRI: The body of fisherman Ebrahim Yaman, who went missing last Tuesday, was recovered Saturday evening about 23 nautical miles off Kuala Sibuti.

A statement from the Fire and Rescue Department ( Bomba) said the body was found by a local fisherman and retrieved by a Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency ( MMEA) vessel around 6pm.

The operation to locate the victim had been going on for the past five days involving MMEA, Bomba, Civil Defence Force, as well as villagers from Kampung Kuala Sibuti and Kampung Kuala Niah.

The body was brought to the Marina Bay jetty later the same night prior to being taken to Miri Hospital where waiting family members were able to identify the body as that of Ebrahim through his wristwatch.

Ebrahim’s remains were then brought to the Sungai Beluboh Muslim cemetery in Tukau here for burial at 1am yesterday.

The 59-year- old fisherman was reported to have gone out fishing alone about one kilometre off the Kuala Niah coast on Tuesday morning. His failure to return home that afternoon, as was his routine, prompted a search which led to the discovery of his unmanned boat and fishing gear.
