Change lifestyle to control diabetes
KUCHING: People with diabetes need to change their lifestyle, especially food intake, engage in more physical exercise instead of depending solely on medication, said National Diabetes Institute ( Nadi) chairman Professor Emeritus Datuk Mustaffa Embong.
He said the treatment for diabetes has come from the patients’ own commitment and determination to control their blood sugar level.
“The only thing is to control blood sugar level to prevent complications. The other thing is to cut down on carbohydrate or starch in noodles, rice, bread, etc,” he told Bernama when met on the sideline of the Diabetes Asia 2018 Conference Awarding Ceremony at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching ( BCCK) here yesterday.
Also present were Nadi permanent members, Prof Datuk Anuar Zaini Md Zain and Local Organising Committee Chairman Dr William Voon Yu Huat.
On the conference, Mustaffa said Nadi brought 11 foreign experts, and 40 of Malaysia’s own experts, to share their experience, as well as to educate and interact with local medical practitioners about the changes in diabetes treatment.
Meanwhile, Lim Phei Ching, from the Pharmacy Department of the Penang Hospital, was named winner of Professor Mustaffa Young Investigators’ Awards, while the second place went to Rebecca Ng Mei Li ( Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang) and Aylwin Lim Ming Wee ( Clinical Research Centre, Sarawak General Hospital) won third place.
Dr Eliana Ahmad, from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya, won first place for the Oral Presentation Award; Dr May Khin Sow of Kulliyyah of Pharmacy, International Islamic University Malaysia was second and Dr Sumanto Haldar of the Singapore Institute for Clinical Sciences, Agency for Science Technology and Research, was third.
In the Poster Presentation Award, Dr Arimin Mat of St Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin, won the first place, while Dr Rebecca Ng Mei Li (Advanced Medical and Dental Institute, Universiti Sains Malaysia) and Lim Phei Ching ( Pharmacy Department, Penang Hospital) won the second and third prizes, respectively. — Bernama
