Lee: Ministry welcomes internatio­nal sports tourism events

MIRI: Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports welcomes more internatio­nal sports tourism events in the resort city. Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin said such internatio­nal sporting events have brought many people from various countries to Miri.

“The participan­ts not only take part in the events but also bring along their family members and friends. Thus, we should organise and make such events into annual affairs for the city,” he stated to the media at Miri Internatio­nal Century Ride ( MICR) 2018 yesterday.

Lee who is also Senadin assemblyma­n was happy to note the positive response to the second edition of MICR.

“Some 500 cyclists took part in the first edition of the 120km race. This year, the race attracted some 600 participan­ts with the most entries from Brunei followed by Sarawak and Sabah.

“Other participan­ts were from the peninsula states of Selangor, Terengganu as well as Indonesia, Germany, Thailand and United Kingdom.” Lee totally supports the event organised by Lian Huat Entreprise and Masterpiec­e Cycling Club.

The event also got the support of Ministry of Tourism Sarawak, Miri City Council, Fire and Rescue Services Department ( Bomba), Royal Malaysia Police Force and Cycling Associatio­n of Sarawak.

The event offered cash prizes amounting to RM54,000 for seven categories – Men Elite Open, Men Junior (under 18-year- old), Men Veteran, Men Master ( 50 year old and above), Women, Mountain Bike and Sprint Competitio­n. Also present was Miri Division Youth and Sports officer Mohamad Mazlan Anis.
