-

SIBU: The Borneo Cultural Festival ( BCF) is an ideal platform to gel racial harmony and unity besides being Sibu’s biggest tourism event.

In his remarks at the closing of BCF 2018 on Saturday night, Sibu Municipal Council ( SMC) chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King said it was the place where locals from all walks of life mingled.

He added it was one of the extravaganza festivals in Sarawak.

“It is an annual event organised by SMC celebrating music, dance and traditional food of the multi- cultural communities of Sibu such as Chinese, Malay/ Melanau, Dayak and others,” he said.

Themed ‘ Beauty in Ethnic Diversity’, the BCF showcased performers from both local and foreign groups showing off cultures across borders.

“Your active and dynamic participation have no doubt made BCF a successful event and further promote tourism for Sarawak in general and Homely Sibu – Heartland of Borneo, in particular.”

Adding on, Tiong, who is Dudong assemblyman, hoped that through BCF, the colourful culture will not perish or remain ‘submerged’ in the midst of the globalisation craze.

“Instead, all these invaluable cultural values instilled through BCF should be carried on in our daily life to enhance racial harmony and strengthen national unity in our multiracial society,” he stressed.

Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah officiated at the event.

Permanent secretary to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports, Sarawak Hii Chang Kee, SMC deputy chairwoman Rogayah Jamain and Sibu Resident Charles Siaw were among those present.
