Volunteers celebrate Sarawak Day with beach clean up

-

SIBU: More than 300 people in central Sarawak got together to celebrate Sarawak Day last weekend by cleaning up Oya beach in Dalat.

These volunteers from Sibu, Mukah and Dalat, who spent the morning cleaning up the beach, included a businesswoman from Sibu who said that it was a way to show love for fairland Sarawak.

She said a group of 50 volunteers had planned the event for a month and people of various races and ages from all walks of life helped to collect about 2,279kg of rubbish.

“We were blessed with a beautiful and clear morning. We came from different towns with one common ambition — to love Sarawak and its land.”

She said that plastic made up the bulk of the rubbish collected along with paper boxes and discarded household items, including some electrical appliances.

She said the participants were divided into five groups to cover every corner of the beach.

“Through this activity, we are passing on the message — love our land and environment. Don’t destroy marine life.”

It is estimated that there are 100 million tonnes of plastic in the oceans worldwide today and over 100 million marine animals are killed annually by pollution.
