Three killed in highway crash

IPOH: Three people were killed in a highway crash involving a car and an express bus, both heading towards the same direction, at KM307 of the North South Expressway here yesterday.

Kampar district police chief Supt Ng Kong Soon said the crash occurred at 9.30am and the fatalities were the three passengers in the car, identified as Cheah Chui Yoong, 60, Cheah Yook Ching, 57 and, Yew Kim Nyuk, 53. He said the car driver, Bryan Cheah Ern-Li, 24, and his father, Cheah Chee Voon, 61, who was in the front passenger seat, were injured and sent to Kampar Hospital for treatment.

The express bus driver and his 16 passengers were not injured, he said in a statement here yesterday.

Ng said that based on preliminar­y investigat­ion, the car skidded and crashed into the divider when one of its rear tyre burst.

The car spun several times and was hit by the approachin­g express bus, he said, adding that the impact caused the three rear passengers to be thrown out of the vehicle and died on the spot. — Bernama
