Multi-purpose park proposed at Sibu Town Square Phase II

SIBU: Sarawak’s first multipurpo­se park costing about RM2.5 million has been proposed to be built at Sibu Town Square Phase II, Assistant Minister of Housing and Public Health Dr Annuar Rapaee disclosed.

He said the park to be called Sibu Active Youth Space ( SAYS) is a youth specific space complete with a purpose built facility for the community to promote a healthy lifestyle.

Dr Annuar, who is also Assistant Minister of Education and Technologi­cal Research, said Sarawak government has approved the budget for the project.

“We will present (the proposal) to Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) to get consent for the area to be utilised. After that, we will work together with SMC to construct the project – expected to begin in the next six months.

“The project will take between 12 to 18 months to complete and we will propose that SMC be the implementi­ng agency,” he said after a meeting to form the project’s working committee on Sunday.

The meeting also gathered local youths’ input on what they desire for the park.

The Nangka assemblyma­n explained that the space is a multipurpo­se facility, which comprises world-class skateboard, BMX and rollerblad­es park with facilities to cater for all ages.

It also comes with a park, calistheni­cs, wall climbing – fit for all skills levels.

There will also be stage for presentati­ons, music and performanc­es in addition to family space seating and jogging track as well as tightrope walking.

Adding on, he said the facility will also have indoor features to suit programmes for young people such as group counsellin­g sessions, public speaking sessions, free wifi/internet access, workshops/ events, stall/ kiosk/container shops and e-sports activities.

“The objective of the project is to create a multi-use park and family space for all ages to enjoy,” Dr Annuar said.
