One-day jail, RM10,000 fine for three men who offered bribe to civil servants

ALOR SETAR: Three men were sentenced to a day’s jail and fined RM10,000 each, in default six months’ jail, by the Sessions Court here yesterday for offering bribes to civil servants.

Judge Azman Abu Hassan handed down the sentence on the three men, who were charged separately, after they pleaded guilty to their respective charges. They were Tan Kok Aun, 43, Loo Jiunn Shyan, 27, and Ooi See Gee, 49.

Tan and Loo were charged with attempting to bribe a National Anti- Drug Agency officer Nasruddin Abdul Rahman at an entertainm­ent outlet, Twenty 6, in Kampung Berjaya, at 1.15am last Feb 27. Tan, a building contractor, pleaded guilty to offering a bribe of RM1,000 to Nasruddin as an inducement to exempt him from urine test, while Loo had offered the officer RM1,100 for the release of his wife, who tested positive for drugs.

Meanwhile Ooi, who is a lorry driver, was charged with attempting to bribe an officer from the Selangor enforcemen­t division of the Domestic Trade, Cooperativ­es and Consumeris­m Ministry, Kamal Reza Kamal Pasha, to not take action against him for an offence under the Control of Supplies Regulation­s 1974. The offence was committed at Lot 36, Bukit Kayu Hitam Industrial Area, at 11.45 am on Nov 20, 2014.

The three men were charged under Section 17( b) of the Malaysian Anti- Corruption Commission Act ( MACC) 2009, which provides an imprisonme­nt for up to 20 years and fine of not less than five times the amount of the gratificat­ion, or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction.
