‘Lorries speeding in housing areas a threat to residents’

-

MIRI: Lorries speeding in housing areas around Taman Tunku are threatening the safety of residents and other road users, said Sibuti member of parliament Lukanisman Awang Sauni.

He called on the authorities concerned to monitor and take action against the errant lorry drivers.

“Residents and parents have expressed their anxiety about the speeding lorries coming from the Lusut area each day and the number of lorries is also dangerous to road users. They are worried because it is the main route people use to conduct daily activities, including taking children to school.

“I was made to understand that these lorry drivers carry soil that they take from Lusut to another site and now the road is being dominated by lorries that often commute to and from Lusut,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Lukanisman said complaints have been made to the Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board, however only one summons has been issued so far.

“The residents are asking the Road Transport Department (JPJ) or police to impose roadblocks and demand the lorry drivers not to use the residential route as their route. I take this matter seriously because I do not want any untoward incidents happening, thus I hope something will be done as soon as possible to tackle this issue before it gets worse,” he added.
