MIRI: Pupils of three schools in Subis District were forced to skip class after their schools were shut down yesterday due to flood caused by heavy rain.

A total of 195 pupils, 34 teachers and six non-teaching staff from SK Beliau Ahad, SK Kpg Bulau and SK Rumah Essau were affected by the closure, said the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat in a press release early yesterday.

According to the statement, the flood level at SK Beliau Ahad began to rise to about 30 cm at 1am and rose further to 0.3 metres from 5am to 6am. It is learnt that the water level only receded by two inches yesterday morning.

Meanwhile at SK Kampung Balau, the statement said the water level began to rise at 3am yesterday and was about one foot high at the village, causing it to be flooded.

The statement further said the route to SK Rumah Essau was flooded with about two feet of water, causing four classes at the ground floor of the school to be inundated with rain water of about one foot deep.

Water level at SK Rumah Essau began to rise on Aug 1 morning but classes were still held as usual. However, the school had to be closed on Aug 2 due to the rising water level which was registered at about one foot high.

All three schools were forced to close for safety of their pupils and parents have been informed of the rising water levels and closure of the schools.
