MIRI: Dirty beaches here including one fronting Marina Park, continue to haunt concerned Mirians, but not the perpetrators who disregard repeated calls not to make the oceans and rivers their dumping grounds.

A check at Marina Beach on Thursday found tonnes of rubbish washed ashore as far the the eyes could see, mostly household items like plastic bottles.

There was no one strolling at the beach except for two youths fishing at the far end, in contrast to Marina Park which is packed every day especially in the evening with joggers or people taking a walk.

it is not healthy. A few days ago I took photos and uploaded them into my facebook and showed them to my daughter on what she and the public could do,” said Dentonel Misa, when met yesterday.

Dentonel, 35, a local offshore material coordinator with an oil and gas company, his wife Carolyn Kubuk and three children – Clare, Angel and Easton – were among the many people strolling and jogging at Marina Park almost eveyday.

Besides urging the public to be civic- minded and do their part in keeping the environment clean, he also urged the relevant authorities to strictly enforce the relevant laws to nab polluters.

He added that there should be continuous efforts in creating greater public awareness on environmental conservation and rehabilitation, adding that no amount of beach cleaning could solve recurrent problems of rubbish washed ashore on beaches in Miri.
