KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has lost another gold medal prospect when national diver Cheong Jun Hoong was forced to pull out of the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia following chronic injury on her left knee.

She was advised by National Sports Institute ( ISN) Medical Division director Dr Arshad Puji to rest and stay away from any competition and training for six to nine months.

“When my knee became swollen two weeks ago, I quickly went to see a doctor at ISN and it recovered but the swelling came back for the second time.

“After that the doctor advised me to abstain from any activity. It is disappointing and sad to miss the Asian Games,’ she told a media conference at the National Aquatic Centre.

Jun Hoong who sustained the injury two weeks ago was down to compete in the individual 10m platform and synchronised 10m platform at the Asiad.

Jun Hoong will be replaced by Nur Dhabitah Sabri in the 10m individual platform event, while Leong Mun Yee will take her place alongside partner Pandelela Rinong in the 10m synchronised platform event.

“For now, I have to focus and fol low the recovery process provided by ISN as best as possible.

“Once I’m fully recovered, I will think about training and major tournaments like the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. I’m also lucky because, in the next six to nine months, I’m not involved in any major tournament ( apart from the Asian Games),” she said.
