DARO: The scheduled completion date for the long-awaited fire station here is about a month away, but there are fears that the project will not be able to meet its deadline.

Daro assemblyman Safiee Ahmad told The Borneo Post that the RM6.8-million project is scheduled for completion on Sept 10.

“I hope the progress of the project will be closely monitored as the nearest fire station is two-anda-half hours away. In the event of a fire, there will surely be nothing left to salvage by the time firemen arrive,” he said.

He added that he has a tough time facing his constituents whenever there is a fire outbreak as the fire station is something that they have long been waiting for. Safiee also said he hoped all the newly- appointed special officers of the federal government will go to the ground to make sure federal projects are implemented and completed on time.

“The people are fully aware that Pakatan Harapan ministers have been appointing many special officers of late, including those overseeing the Fire and Rescue Department. “I hope they (special officers) will perform their duties and not merely take their appointment for granted,” he said, referring to the recent appointment of Nurhanim Mokhsen and Voon Shiak Ni as special officers to the federal Ministry of Housing and Local Government.

Nurhanim is PKR Sarawak Women chief while Voon is PKR Women national vice-president.

For the Daro fire station, Safiee hopes that the project – originally scheduled for completion in 18 months – will not be delayed for too long.

“The people can understand if there are unforeseen problems (in completing it on time). Personally, I hope the project is able to be completed before the end of 2018,” he said.
