Attentive parents able to prevent children from being lured into social ills — MP

-

KUCHING: It goes without saying that parents must be positive role models for their children, in that good values would help shape the young to become useful and capable members of society.

In this respect, Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii said the parents must uphold the right values and moral principles themselves.

“The right mindset, good habits and ethical codes must be inculcated in our children from young. Parents must monitor their children, care for them and give them advice.

“Adequate attention must be given to children so that the young ones would not be easily influenced by the negative culture in the virtual world,” he said in launching ‘ Parents Day 2018’ at Dewan Masyarakat Kampung Malaysia Jaya off Jalan Astana here yesterday.

Dr Yii also reminded the children to always appreciate what their parents had done for them, stressing: “Without them (parents), we are nobody.”

Taking himself as an example, Dr Yii said he was among one of three siblings, whose parents were government servants.

“My family was not well-off then; my father had to work three jobs a day to bring home the bacon.

“During that time, my parents kept telling me ‘don’t be naughty; study hard’ – but I was very naughty back then.

The right mindset, good habits and ethical codes must be inculcated in our children from young. Parents must monitor their children, care for them and give them advice.

“I did not behave in school – my teachers would even twist my ear for being mischievous. I wanted to just watch television and read comics at the time.

“But my parents really put their heart into imparting the right values in me. To me, they have truly played their part in ensuring that I could pursue medical studies and become who I am today,” he related.

Dr Yii also called upon young individuals to ‘not sell themselves short’, but to be confident in what they are aiming to achieve in life.

He said they should learn to heed the advice of their parents and strive to become capable and successful individuals.

Dr Yii viewed the family institutionasthemostfundamental institution in society, adding that every family ought to uphold healthy upbringing.

In this regard, he lauded the National Population and Family Development Board ( LPPKN), the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development Sarawak and the Community Development Department (Kemas) Sarawak on their joint hosting of ‘Parents Day 2018’.

LPPKN Sarawak director Dennis Chai was also present.
