SIBU: The Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) is organising a campaign to encourage members of the public to donate books to its library here.

SRDC assistant librarian Ahmad Zaidi Arbi said the council is collaborating with Sibu Municipal Council ( SMC) library in the campaign which began on Aug 1 until Oct 31 this year.

“Members of the public who wish to donate their used books may drop them at the SMC Public Library in Keranji Road during its opening hours,” he said.

He added books can be fiction, non-fiction, text books, magazines and whatever material that is suitable for school children.

SRDC will collect the books from the public library every Friday throughout the campaign period, he said.

The campaign was first held last year to replenish its stock of books at the SRDC Library in Sibu Jaya and libraries of rural schools.

“We are hoping to start reading rooms with the donated books in longhouses. But that is still at the planning stage,” Ahmad enthused.

The council will meet with the longhouse folks soon to talk about the plan.

“We want to inculcate reading habit in the rural areas, particularly among the children,” he said.

According to him, SRDC collected about 1,500 books during last year’s campaign.

“Some were really good books which are hardly found in the market,” he said.

The book campaign is a brainchild of SRDC deputy chairman Robert Lau Hui Yew.

In the inaugural campaign, the council used The Borneo Post office in Tuanku Osman Road here as the collection point.

SRDC chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai launched this year’s campaign at the SMC Public Library last week.

Also present were SRDC secretary Justani Joni and a representative from the SMC, Abdul Rahman Taufik.
