Myanmar beggar claims trial to abusing her young nephew, niece

KUALA LUMPUR: A Myanmar beggar pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here yesterday to two charges of abusing her young nephew and niece until they suffered injuries.

Dehena Bi Abdul Rahim,19, made the plea after the two charges were read to her before Judge Mahyon Talib.

According to the first and second charge, the woman was alleged to have abused the boy and girl, aged eight and seven respective­ly, causing injury.

She is alleged to have committed the offence at a squatter house in Kampung Chubadak Tambahan Sentul Pasar, Sentul here between 9 am and 12 pm, between January and July 17 this year.

The mother of two children was charged under Section 31 (1) (a) of the Child Act 2001 which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonme­nt not exceeding 20 years or both, upon conviction.

Prosecutio­n was conducted by deputy public prosecutor N. Joy Jothi while the accused was unrepresen­ted.

The court fixed Aug 30 for mention and for submission of documents as well as for appointmen­t of a counsel. — Bernama
