MIRI: Some 600 participants from 20 contingents took part in the Mardi Gras Lambir parade yesterday.

The participants from various corporate bodies and associations were dressed in traditional costumes.

“I can see various races gathered here united for the parade despite the hot weather.

“This is the true spirit of Sarawakians,” said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who led the parade covering 2.4km.

“This event is very meaningful for us as apart from strengthening ties with each other, it also attracts more tourists to come here for a visit.

“We need to protect such racial and religious harmony among people.”

Event organising chairman Pemanca Wilson Siang said organisers were happy with the support for the second edition of the event.

“It gives us the big picture of what a multiracial society and nation is all about,” he said.

Among those present were Assistant Minister of Local Government Datu Dr Penguang Manggil, Lambir assemblyman Ripin Lamat, Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting, Sibuti member of parliament Lukanisman Awang Sauni, Miri Mayor Adam Yii, and Miri Resident Sherrina Hussaini.
