Lecture to discuss poverty amidst high economic growth
KUCHING: A public lecture titled ‘Poverty Amidst High Economic Growth in Sarawak’ will be held on Aug 28 from 3pm to 5pm at the Sarawak State Library.
Independent economic analyst Dr Madeline Berma will present the lecture jointly organised by the library and the Institute of Management Sarawak (Masa).
A press release said the lecture will discuss the poverty and growth nexus in Sarawak, which has registered rapid economic growth, and is one of the top contributors to gross domestic product, but still has pockets of poverty.
Prior to her retirement, Madeline served for 32 years as an associate professor at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) School of Economics, Faculty of Economics and Business.
The Sarawakian has a doctorate from the University of Hull, England; Master of Arts in Public Policy and Administration from the University of WisconsinMadison, USA; and Bachelor of Economics from UKM.
Madeline’s expertise is in development studies, with much research work carried out on rural development, indigenous economic development, and women in development.
She has contributed to government-backed industrial and master plans, with her key areas of research covering poverty, the indigenous communities of Sarawak and Sabah, non-farm activities, small-scale industries, and rural development.
