Chance for minor placers to giddy up

- By Scoop

KUCHING: The extra racing day added to the normal twoday meeting is a good chance for last week’s minor placers to giddy up and be counted at the Mile 8 Penrissen course here this morning.

While it’s never wise to run before one’s horse to market, there’s no gain without venture and based on the race card, some of the runners that came up a bit short last week, can salvage a measure of pride by giving punters their money’s worth today.

In Race Four (Class II – 1000M), My Moon should stake a strong claim to make up for her disappointing fourth to King De Lego last week.

A drop of 3kg and a good No. 2 marble will add some more lengths to the three-year-old’s chances. Tote this up with the change of jockey – Jasmi Kamar astride this time around – the Beraya Stable’s has a bright chance to reclaim bragging rights.

Twice runner-up Wind Chaser (Roslan Bujang) should also have a say in the race.

Smarting from two second placings in as many as starts – to Rambo and King De Lago on the First and Second Days – the eight-year-old will be bidding to discard the bridesmaid’s tag.

With Roslan Bujang up, 1kg extra and a good No. 3 stall, the W Stable’s galloper can take the race down the wire.

The other runners meriting consideration are Storm Raider (Othman Putit) and newlypromoted Volcano (Hamid Elli). The latter can parlay a drop of 16kg to profitable visit to the payout window.

Peace Pipe (Roslan Bujang) can end a sequence of minor placings in Race Three (Class III – 1000M). The nine-year-old who finished second to Volcano last week, and third in a prior start, looks set to make amends.

Weighing out at 59kg and starting in barrier five, the nippy galloper from W Stable has a bright chance to greet the judges.

The likely challengers are Beraya (Jasmi Kamar) and Bojeng (Othman Putit).

Newly promoted Miracle (Amirzull Othman) also bears watching – with a big drop of 14kg. Apprentice Amirzull Othman will be riding in all the five races today – a just reward for his record-breaking win on Suaji last week.

Of all his engagements, Bukan Lawan Nya can be the ace up the apprentice’s sleeves.

The eight-year-old who finished second and third to Suaji in his last two starts, has a consistent track record of 1123 to date.

With an attractive 3kg apprentice allowance to complement an already handy 53kg, the Beraya Stable’s roan racer can trump the seven-strong field with the feather-light weight on his back.

All eyes will be on Amirzull to do another “Moreira.”

The dangers are Monolita (Jasmi Kamar) and newly promoted King De Lego (Othman Putit). Top weight Suaji is still in it with a good chance based his two record-shattering wins on the First and Second Days.

The four-year-old will weigh out at 68kg after copping 8kg for the imperious double but with rider Amin Abang claiming an apprentice allowance of 1.5kg, the Beraya Stable’s big strider is still a force to be reckoned with.

Two other runners who can step up are Big Chief (Roslan Bujang) and Sau Tugau (Maruf Wahab) in Race One (Class V – 1000M) and Race Two (Class IV – 1000M) respectively.

Big Chief finished second to Dragon Fly last week but can acquit himself better today.

The challenge should come from last start winner Dragon Fly (Amirzull Othman) and Junior Champ (Maruf Wahab).

Sau Tugau who played second fiddle to Miracle last week, after scoring a double in two prior starts, can also rewrite a winning script.

The main dangers are Naga Laut (Amirzull Othman) and Young Generation (Othman Putit). To restore order in their own class, both Big Chief and Sau Tugau will have only the 67kg and 68kg in their saddle bags to beat.
