Turning motion into energy and power
DEVELOPING your ability to design, analyse, optimise, create and maintain mechanical systems are the range of Mechanical Engineering programmes at Management and Science University (MSU)
Mechanical engineering is among the oldest and broadest branch of engineering in the history of mankind, overlapping with disciplines such as electrical, civil, and aerospace engineering.
Many think that mechanical engineering’s popularity among university courses only increases job competition upon graduation but in fact mechanical engineering graduates have a universe of career options to choose from. The famous Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices was written by Master Engineer and Father of Robotics Ismail Al-Jazari.
Kalpana Chawla was a female mechanical engineer and primary operator of the robotic arm onboard Space Shuttle Columbia.
History’s other equally famous mechanical engineers of the world include Nikola Tesla, who designed the alternating current (AC) system; James Watt, best known for his improvement of steam engine design; and Rudolf Diesel, who invented the diesel engine.
Mechanical engineers are responsible in building, designing, and maintaining machinery across a range of uses and industries. They apply fundamental maths and physics laws to build society’s mechanical things, and expectedly have a working knowledge of computers and their applications besides mathematics and physics.
As they are also required to develop understanding of social, environmental, and economic factors, mechanical engineering graduates are able to go into a vast span of career sectors, from manufacturing and defence to construction and healthcare, even to IT and finance.
Mechanical engineering at Management and Science University (MSU)
Mechanical engineering is currently offered at MSU across four programmes and two specialisations. MSU Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (Honours)
This programme prepares you especially well for careers in project and design engineering. Laying your foundation are engineering drawing, computer-aided design, and instrumentation and measurement in your first year; moving on to industrial safety and mechanics of machines in Year Two, and mechatronics and process and manufacturing technology in Year Three. Internship is in the fourth year of the three-and-a-half-year programme.
MSU Diploma in Mechanical Engineering
Your first year will be spent on technical drawing, metrology and instrumentation, and mechanics of materials, before moving on to thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, workshop technology and practice, and industrial training in your second.
Courses in hydraulics and pneumatics, mechanics of machines, and electronics and digital engineering complete your third year. Suitable careers postgraduation include Process Technician, Mould Design Assistant, and Assistant Mechanical Engineer.
MSU Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (Air Conditioning and Refrigeration)
Preparing you for residential, commercial, and industrial refrigeration and air conditioning will be this specialisation, where fluid mechanics and electrical technology form your first-year courses.
You move on to heat transfer, air-conditioning and refrigeration maintenance, and industrial training, before finishing off the two-and-a-halfyear programme with air-conditioning system design and workshop technology and practice. With your MSU education embedding industry and entrepreneurship, you will be equipped to start your own repair and maintenance business orseek HVAC/R technician positions.
MSU Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (High-rise Building Maintenance)
This specialisation will put you on first-year courses in applied mechanics, thermodynamics, and electrical wiring and troubleshooting.
YearTwo will be spent on lift and escalator maintenance, hydraulic and pneumatics, and industrial safety and organization, and half the third year on industrial training.
Future careers include job titles such as Building Supervisor and Maintenance Technician.
