Daredevil motorcycli­sts held, 527 summonses dished out in traffic ops

KUCHING: Police arrested three youths and issued 527 traffic summonses during an operation at a parking area along Jalan Stadium here on Sunday.

District police chief ACP Ng Ah Lek in a statement said the youths were detained for recklessly riding their motorcycle­s and endangerin­g other road users.

“Two of the individual­s were performing ‘wheelies’ while the third rammed his way past the roadblock in an attempt to escape before zigzagging his way through traffic prior to being caught.

“All three are being investigat­ed under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a jail term not less than five years

and a fine between RM5,000 and RM15,000 upon conviction,” he said.

The one- day operation saw a total of 221 vehicles inspected which resulted in 22 motorcycle­s impounded for various violations.

Ng also disclosed that the majority of those nabbed during the operation were underage youths, and called on parents to make sure their children are not involved in unhealthy activities.

“Similar operations will be carried out from time-to-time in an effort to curb such activities and to safeguard Kuching folk from such menace,” he said.
