KOTA SAMARAHAN: The State Special Olympics Championship this year concluded yesterday with the Kuching Special Olympics branch contingent crowned as overall champion of the competition.

Minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah officiated at the closing ceremony of the competition.

In her speech, she commented that this year’s edition of the championship was the best ever organised so far.

Thus, she hopes that the organisers of the next championship scheduled to be held in two years’ time will also do their very best.

“This competition was a success because it received a lot of support from the volunteers and also the venue where this competition was held which is the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas),” she said.

She thanked Unimas for providing good facilities for the competition. Fatimah also hoped that all those who participated in the tournament would continue to do their very best in their next tournaments.

On a related matter, she expressed hope that a Special Olympics branch will be formed in Samarahan and Bintulu soon to give young people with special needs a platform to participate in tournaments like the Special Olympics Championship.

A total of 212 special athletes were involved in this year’s Special Olympics Championship.

Sibu will be the host for the next championship in two years’ time.
