KUCHING: Engkilili assemblyman Dr Johnical Rayong Ngipa was concerned about the victims of a fire at Rumah Engkabi Jamu in San Semanju, Lubok Antu that he rushed there from here yesterday.

He, however, was glad to find out that all the earliest steps in evacuation had been taken care of.

The fire victims are put up at a classroom in SK San Semanju.

“All 46 of them will be looked after by the Welfare Department and other members of the community in terms of provision of food and clothes,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Rayong, who is also United People’s Party ( UPP) Youth chairman, then urged people to be extra careful when cooking and not to leave fire unattended.

“Be extra careful when using electrical appliances and not to throw away cigarette butts indiscriminately. All these advices are useful so that there would not be any more fire incidents. Fire incidents can traumatise the victims and survivors. And then all properties will be lost in the fire. Therefore, all must be careful and take cautious steps,” he said.

The fire incident at Rumah Cr TR Engkabi Jamu occurred at 8am yesterday and destroyed seven homes of the eight- door longhouse.

Fire engines from Betong and Sri Aman were deployed to the scene.

The longhouse, located separately from another longhouse which is longer, was just part of the 60 homes which Cr TR Engkabi administered.

Accompanying Rayong were Lubok Antu district officer Richard Ngumbang and Lubok Antu Welfare officer Sanggat Rangia.

A day earlier, Rumah Museh longhouse in Pantu, Sri Aman also caught fire.
