Kembara Muda Rakyat cultivates love and knowledge

LANGKAWI: Nearly 90 students from various schools nationwide took part in the fifth edition of Kembara Muda Rakyat ( KMRV) programme, aimed at cultivating love for the country through an understanding of its culture and heritage.

Yayasan Bank Rakyat ( YBR) general manager, Norashikin Shaharudin, said that having the event in Langkawi, known for its rich tradition, is in line with the cultural theme adopted for KMRV.

“These types of programmes are seen as the best way to foster a sense of cultural appreciation among the students. We also insert Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) as well as environmental education models in the activities.

“It is hoped that the effort will nurture an interest in STEM subjects and be a catalyst for students to become adept in the sciences, engineering, medicine as well as other technological subjects,” she said to Bernama after officiating the KMRV 2018, here, on Saturday.

Organised by YBR, the programme started on Friday and ends today. The KMRV participants – students aged between 13 and 17 years old – are being assisted by 34 facilitators from various higher education institutes who acted as mentors.

Activities undertaken by students include visits to fishermen’s village, artefact restoration, and visits to natural and environmental parks and areas.

Also present were Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s Institute for Environment and Development ( Lestari) Associate Fellow, Datuk Shaharuddin Mohamad Ismail, and Bank Rakyat manager for Langkawi branch, Ahmad Zamiri Othman. — Bernama
