Organisers hope for multiracial participation in mooncake competition
KUCHING: The Kuching InterCultural Mooncake Festival will be held from Sept 17 to 24, from 6.30pm to 11pm at Carpenter Street and Ewe Hai Street here.
The festival is organised by the Federation of Kuching Division Community Associations and the Old Market Community Association, with the support of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports.
This year’s Snow Skin Mooncake competition, which is open to all races, will again be the highlight of the festival.
Last year, the competition attracted participants from a cross section of society, and was won by Siti Aishah from Semariang.
This year, the organisers hope to attract participants from the Dayak and Indian communities besides those from the Malay community.
“We hope to make a festival for all races to enjoy and continue our Sarawakian tradition of celebrating our differences through understanding.
“Carpenter Street, being the host to the Unity Arch, has always promoted unity in diversity that has been fostered in Kuching city,” a spokesman for the organisers said.
The competition will be held at Plaza Merdeka Shopping Mall from 7.30pm to 8.30pm on Sept 22, with registration starting at 6.30pm.
Due to limited places, registrations will be based on a ‘first come, first in’ basis.
The organisers will provide all the materials for the making of snow skin mooncakes, but decoration articles have to be brought by competitors.
Decorations themes and articles must be based on competitors’ idea of the Mooncake Festival.
Scoring will be based on 25 per cent for texture clarity, 25 per cent for decoration, 25 per cent for crafting skill, and 25 per cent for hygiene.
The organiser will be inviting experts to judge the competition, and the decision of the judges is final. Any objection will not be entertained.
The winner will receive RM300, while second and third place winners will get RM200 and RM100, respectively. There are seven consolation prizes of RM50 each.
