‘Rejection of Bill to repeal Anti-Fake News Act democratic’

-

KUCHING: Batang Sadong MP Dato Sri Nancy Shukri describes the rejection of the Bill to repeal the AntiFake News Act 2018 by the Senate as democratic.

The Bill did not get the support of 28 members of the Senate while 21 supported it and three others, abstained.

The three who abstained are those appointed by former Sarawak Barisan Nasional ( BN), now known as Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).

We are seeing true democracy being practised in Malaysia. I support the decision because the Act was not enacted only for politicians but just anyone can be affected by it. It was debated in the Lower House. Dato Sri Nancy Shukri, Batang Sadong MP

Nancy, who was Law Minister under the previous BN government, said she supported the decision of the Senate.

“We are seeing true democracy being practised in Malaysia. I support the decision because the Act was not enacted only for politicians but just anyone can be affected by it. It was debated in the Lower House.

“We could see some former opposition members supported the Act. They realised the need to have such an Act as long as it is applied and enforced fairly. I applaud the decision made by the Upper House and hope to see future Bills to be scrutinised in detail for the sake of a better Malaysia,” she said.

The Bill to repeal the controversial Act was rejected by the Senate following its second reading yesterday.

Some said that the current Senate is still being controlled as most of the members whose two-year term has not expired yet, were appointed by BN.

BN was however toppled by Pakatan Harapan in the last parliamentary election.
