IAK lines up exciting activities from August to December this year

KUCHING: The Indian Associatio­n Kuching ( IAK) is hosting exciting activities for its members, friends of various races and well-wishers, from the month of Aug to Dec this year.

Its president Nadison Rathenum said this year several interestin­g activities have been lined up in conjunctio­n with the upcoming Deepavali on Nov 6.

“Among the activities planned are the badminton competitio­n held at the IAK Hall, which was carried out earlier in August. We have received great response from the community, and we hope to organise another of such event in the future,” he said at a press conference yesterday.

Apart from badminton, another activity is the Indian cultural exhibition and symposium which will be held from Oct 6 to 7. The exhibition is planned to take place at Plaza Merdeka Kuching on Oct 6, where there will be interestin­g exhibits and activities for the general public. The symposium will be carried out the following day.

Nadison also said the associatio­n is also organising a Deepavali charity event to be held on Oct 27 at the IAK Hall.

It is an annual event organised to assist the less fortunate in the Indian community and other races in the state.

“The highlight of the this year’s Deepavali celebratio­n will be the ‘Deepavali Night’ dinner on Nov 17, to be held at the IAK Hall, whereby Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has been invited to grace the occasion. We are expecting about 500 people to attend the event.

“The function will see the crowning of the Deepavali Saree Queen 2018 and presentati­on of education awards to outstandin­g Indian children and prize presentati­on for the competitio­ns carried out previously in the month of Aug,” he said.

The Deepavali Saree Queen 2018 contest is open to all members of the society from different ethnicitie­s, and contest forms are available.

Nadison added that the education awards are for outstandin­g Indian children in last year’s public examinatio­ns - Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah ( UPSR), Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia ( SPM) and Sijil Tinggi Persekolah­an Malaysia (STPM) – to encourage and motivate the students to strive for success.
