MIRI: The 3rdedition of Borneo Takraw Championship, which will held in Lawas this Nov, is expected to attract top teams with state and national players.

The RM6,000 cash prize and Raja Libas Borneo Cup await the champion while the runnerup and third place will pocket RM5,000 and RM3,000.

“Many teams from Semenanjung Malaysia, Sabah, Labuan, Brunei and other foreign countries have expressed their interest and this would be exciting for fans,” said organising chairman council lor Semie Haji Nasip. He said Raja Libas Borneo could also be developed into a brand name for Lawas in promoting traditional sports such as sepak takraw.

He referred to neighbouring Limbang District which has successfully promoted itself as the centre of international tug- of-war competition while Bintulu has an international kites festival.

“We are optimistic that Raja Libas Borneo can be an icon for sports tourism for Lawas district,” he added.

All participating teams will be staying at Homestay instead of hotels this year in a move by the organisers to enable participants to be better acquainted with Lawas.

The organising committee will fix the tournament date after its next meeting soon.

The tournament is organised by Kelab Pemuda Wawasan Bukit Sari ini collaboration with PBB Bukit Sari service centre, Lawas District Council, DUBS Lawas, Fama, Mara and Sarawak Sepak Takraw Association.
