MIRI: Parents should allow teachers to carry out light punishment against those students with bad behaviour and lack of discipline at school.

Member of Parliament for Sibuti Lukanisman Awang Sauni says it is not wrong for the school to carry out disciplinary action as long as such action will not result in any harmful effect to the student’s physical and mental development.

“In the old days, it was common for the teachers to carry out disciplinary actions against those students who have poor attitude issues at school.

Lukanisman pointed out the main objective of school disciplinary action is to discipline students who have attitude problems at school.

He added that the disciplinary action should not necessarily involve physical contact of punishment as the punishment can be also in the form of conducting community works at school such as cleaning the school toilet.

He believed by having disciplinary action, it will help the school to produce quality students who not only perform well in academic but also have good personality as future leaders.

He also voiced out his concern on the increasing student involvement in social ills particularly drug abuse.

At the function, he announced a government grant from the state government worth RM250,000 for the school to build track and field facility.

In addition, he also announced another government grant worth RM20,000 for the school’s parent teachers association ( PTA).
