SIBU: The Education Foundation of Wong Nai Siong Secondary School ( WNSSS) yesterday handed out scholarships totalling RM407,500 to 46 students to enable them to pursue their tertiary education.

Of the 46, 10 were new recipients. The others have already entered institutions of higher learning either locally or overseas. The foundation, established eight years ago, has so far benefited over 130 students.

Foundation chairman Dato Henry Lau Lee Kong officiated at the scholarship presentation ceremony at the school yesterday afternoon. Speaking at the function, Lau said the scholarships were given as a way to encourage the students to study hard. While the foundation does its part, Lau said he expected teachers and parents to do their bits to ensure the students excel in their studies.

To the scholarship recipients, Lau advised them to treasure the opportunity given them to further their studies by going full swing in their learning.

“Hopefully, when you’ve completed your study you’ll return to contribute to society and play your role in nation-building,” he exhorted. Lau also urged them to give back to their home town, particularly their alma mater when they are successful in life.

On Wong Nai Siong School, he noted of the tremendous growth in the student population.

“This reflects the acceptance of the good Chinese education system adopted by our school. It augurs well for our school’s future,” he pointed out.

School principal Lu Yew Hiiung, who also spoke, said more parents are willing to send their children to study in Wong Nai Siong School. He said this is a clear manifestation of parents’ confidence in Chinese education.

According to Lu, over 80 per cent of the school’s students have proceeded to tertiary education either locally or abroad.
