MP lauds school for ‘positive change’
MIRI: SK Pujut Corner has further strengthened its reputation in academic and co- curriculum performance as well as student discipline.
Saying this has given a good impression to the public, Miri MP Dr Teo Yu Keng attributed the positive changes to cooperation between the school management, teachers and parents as well as students.
“SK Pujut Corner was formerly called ‘ Sekolah Pujut Sampah’ but it has fought to prove itself on par with other schools and proven that the title given was wrong. If we look around the school and its infrastructure, there have been numerous changes in the school which augurs well.
“More importantly, the school is consistently growing and advancing in academic and curricular performance. Thus, their improvement deserves more than a pat on the shoulder,” said Teo at the school’s National Sports Day cum Children’s Day celebration yesterday.
The school, which has over 1,200 students currently is said to be among the schools in Miri to have excelled.
On the National Sports Day celebration, Dr Teo spoke on the importance of sports in the lives of Malaysians and to the country.
“The call from the Ministry of Youth and Sports on the importance of National Sports Day has a bigger purpose. The government does not just intend to inculcate sports culture but sees this as an opportunity for the people to strengthen the relationship between people of different culture, races, religions and ethnicities.
“A healthy lifestyle also helps reduce obesity among Malaysians,” said Dr Teo.
Dr Teo also told teachers and parents that Children’s Day is a reminder that children are the future of the world.
“They are the nation’s most valuable asset and should be given the best to ensure their well-being, as failure to provide for them is like a failure to provide for our nation and country.
The future, he added, will demand a generation that is independent, creative, analytical and compassionate.
He appealed to all stakeholders “to create a platform for children to grow by giving them the care and attention they need.”
Dr Teo then pledged RM4,000 for the school’s activity fund.
Also present at the function were headmistress of SK Pujut Corner headmistress Suriyati Amit and Parents’ Teachers Association chairman Indra Hussin.
