SEB explores alternative energy to become digital utility
KUCHING: Sarawak Energy Berhad ( SEB) will explore alternative energy as part of its generation mix, one of their efforts in adapting to become a digital utility in step with global trends, and pursuing balanced energy development by harnessing indigenous natural resources to benefit Sarawak.
According to its generation arm SEB Power chief executive officer James Ung, the organisation had achieved a balanced energy generation mix for a secure energy future for Sarawak and beyond.
“Our generation mix is predominantly hydropower, and we are also maintaining our thermal plants in order to ensure security of supply. By doing so, we have built capacity to help spur the economic growth of Sarawak. We are also researching generation and applications of other energy sources,” he told the about 600 delegates comprising key industry players and service providers at the inaugural Sarawak International Business Exhibition and Conference ( SIBEC) here yesterday.
Ung also explained how pursuing hydropower had secured Sarawak’s several advantages.
“Our venture into hydropower has enabled us to provide the lowest average unsubsidised tariffs in Malaysia. We also export electricity to West Kalimantan, displacing the equivalent in diesel generation for our neighbour and marking a significant milestone towards realising the Borneo Grid,” said Ung.
Sarawak Energy’s objectives are closely aligned to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals including providing greater access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy system and reduce carbon emission intensity to mitigate climate change. SIBEC 2018 is organised by Sarawak Business Federation, and is supported and endorsed by the Sarawak government with the objectives to promote business and investment, to support the transformation of Sarawak’s digital economy, and to showcase the promotion of Digital Technology in Sarawak.
The two- day event was declared open by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
