Julau athletes steal limelight in Sarikei School C’ship

SARIKEI: Seven State Schools Sports Council ( MSSS) records – six by throwers - were among the records smashed during the threeday Sarikei Divisional Level School Sports Council ( MSSB) Athletics Developmen­t Championsh­ip which ended at the Sarikei Sports Complex yesterday.

They were in the Boys Under13 Hammer Throw by Wong Yew In of SMK Tong Hua with 52.82m ( Old Record: 35.30m), Girls U-11 Shot Put by Alyssa Jessye James of Meradong with 9.46m ( 9.37m), Girls U-13 High Jump by Martha Morong of SMk Pakan with 1.48m (1.43m), Girls U-14 Hammer by Joyee Wong Hui Yi of SMK Tong Hua with 38.61m ( 29.96m), Girls U-14 Discus by Clarence Syree of SMK Julau with 33.33m (28.95m), Boys U- 17 Shot Put by Jonah Chang Rigan of SMK Sungai Paoh with 16.97m (16.25m), Girls U-17 Hammer by Ailena Thipong Laga of SMK St. Anthony with 48.82m (40.22m).

Jonah Chang Rigan of SMK Sungai Paoh was crowned as the Sports Boy of the meet while Clarence Syree of SMK Julau was crowned Sports Girl.

SMK Julau No. 2 amassed 278 points to emerge as overall champion followed by SMK Julau (268) and SMK Bandar Bintangor (219).

In the inter- district competitio­n for primary schools, Julau District contingent collected 177 points as overall champion with Meradong District (128) and Sarikei District ( 119) in second and third place respective­ly.

Outstandin­g athletes were selected to represent Sarikei Division at the State-level MSS Athletics Developmen­t Meet to be held in Bintulu from Oct 23-28.

Meradong assemblyma­n Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing, who officiated at the closing ceremony, announced a contributi­on of RM10,000 to the Divisional contingent and RM2,000 each to the 13 participat­ing secondary schools.

Among those present were Assi stant Sarikei District Education Of f icer Faustino Frederick Emperan, Assistant Meradong District Education Officer Nasaruddin Ibrahim and SMK Sungai Paoh principal Paul Law. At the end of the final day, Law presented the meet flag to Hii Kwong Ung, principal of SMK Bandar Bintangor, which will host next year’s championsh­ip.
