‘Put up warning signs to slow down’

MIRI: The authorities must erect road warning signs near settlements and schools in the interior parts of the state as there is a tendency for motorists to speed in these areas.

Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau said drivers tend to speed when passing through the interior due to less traffic and fewer bends along the road.

“There is a tendency for motorists to drive fast as the road is straight and there are fewer cars most of the time.

“There needs to be more road signs to warn motorists that they are approaching a settlement or school, while motorists themselves should be wary of pedestrians or vehicles entering or exiting junctions,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

Dennis was responding to the tragic death of a 10-year- old girl and her three-year- old niece, who were knocked down while crossing the road in front of SK

In the 10.30am incident, Carin Tingan was carrying her niece Monica Lungan when the pair was hit by a pickup truck driven by a 28-year- old man, who was travelling towards Lapok from Bakong.

Dennis, who visited the scene of the accident on his way back here from Long Lama, noted there were no road warning signs leading to the accident scene.

Expressing sadness over the deaths of the two girls, he also

suggested that schools in the interior hold road safety education for their students, with similar talks organised for rural adults.

He also said motorcyclists and pillion riders in rural areas tend to not wear crash helmets, while also carrying more than one pillion rider.

“Being in a rural or interior area where there is less presence of Road Transport Department (JPJ) or police personnel doesn’t give you the green light to break traffic laws.”
