DCM: Foreign investors drawn by Sarawak’s open policy

KUCHING: The Sarawak government adopts an open policy when it comes to foreign investment, especially those that are significan­t to the state’s economic developmen­t.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said it is because of this policy that many foreign companies have already expressed their interest to invest in Sarawak.

investors first and foremost. The state government needs to know in detail about the status of these investing companies and also that of their associate companies that they proposed to participat­e in their projects,” he said.

On Tuesday, Awang Tengah was briefed by Beca Sci-Tech from China which has indicated its interest in investing in the state’s petro- chemical industry.

He said the Sarawak government also needs to study in detail the plan of Beca Sci-Tech and its downstream products that could benefit communitie­s surroundin­g their proposed petro- chemical industry.

“In view of the petro- chemical investment of Beca Sci-Tech, the company is also required to tell the state government of its ‘ feedstock’ suppliers, apart from detailed informatio­n on its plan and proposed project,” he added.

Awang Tengah, who is also Minister of Industrial and Entreprene­ur Developmen­t, said he is happy with this latest developmen­t and hopes that the proposed project would become a reality.

“Assistance will be provided to smoothen the process of implementa­tion involving any foreign investment project,” he pointed out.

The meeting with Beca SciTech was held at Awang Tengah’s office at Wisma Sumber Alam in Petra Jaya here, and was attended by Assistant Minister of Industries and Investment Malcolm Mussen Lamoh, Deputy State Secretary Datu Abu Bakar Marzuki, permanent secretary to the Ministry of Industrial and Entreprene­ur Developmen­t Datu Liaw Soon Eng, Regional Economic Corridor Developmen­t Authority ( Recoda) CEO Datu Ismawi Ismuni and Beca Sci-Tech chairman Fridy Dong, among others.
