Concern over indiscriminate dumping of rubbish

-

SIBU: Residents of Kampung Bahagia Jaya Lane 9 are concerned over the indiscriminate dumping of rubbish by the roadside there.

“It is smelly, unhygienic and an eyesore,” a resident lamented on the dumping. Speaking on condition of anonymity, he said the sorry state of affairs has been going on for about five years.

“Complaints were made over the issue and the Sibu Municipal Council ( SMC) had responded to our complaints,” he said.

According to him, the council had placed a bulk bin nearby, and even put up anti-littering notice in the area.

“Sadly, people have continued to dump their rubbish there indiscriminately, even throwing refuse into a nearby drain,” he said adding that some have even resorted to burning the rubbish.

The resident said the village’s security and development committees (JKKKs) and neighbourhood watch committees ( KRTs) had also carried out many joint cleaning-up exercises.

Another resident who also spoke on condition of anonymity, said all the cleaning- ups had failed to change the bad habit of the people who dumped their rubbish there.

“Even the garbage collectors have been helping us to clean up the place. We appeal to those responsible for throwing the rubbish in our neighbourhood to be more civic-minded.

“Every household has been given a green bin. Please make full use of it,” she appealed.

She added: “It is our kampung. All of us shoulder the responsibility of keeping our living environment clean.

“The council has helped. Even the garbage collectors have gone the extra mile to clean up the place we made dirty.”
