Malaysia wiped out at rain-hit CM Cup tennis c’ship
KUCHING: Darrshan Suresh, the last Malaysian in the fray, crashed out in the boys singles third round of the rain- disrupted 32nd Sarawak Chief Minister’s Cup ( II) ITF Junior Circuit (Grade 3) tennis championship yesterday.
The ITF No. 414 and tournament third seed from Selangor lost in straight sets 3- 6, 2- 6 to Chinese Taipei’s Chang Tzu Li, who will play fifth seed Cooper White of Australia in the last eight.
Ninth seed Jose Antonio Tria from the Philippines also had his campaign cut short by Danish challenger Erik Eliasson who won 4- 6, 6-2, 6-1.
Eliasson’s next match will be tough as his opponent is top seed Eric Vanshelboim of Ukraine who ousted 14th seed Casey Hooper 75, 6- 4.
Second seed Lancelot Carnello of Sweden eased into the last eight with a 6-2, 6-1 win over 15th seed Guntinun Scootinun- Opart of Thailand.
His quarterfinals opponent is eighth seed Carl Emil Overbeck after the Danish lad defeated Australia’s Alex Carroll 6- 3, 7- 5.
The other quarterfinals will be between sixth seed Richard Raad of Sweden and Japanese 13th seed Hikaru Takeda.
In the girls singles third round matches, top seed from Indonesia Pri ska Madelyn Nug roho marched into the last eight after she dismissed the challenge from Chinese Taipei’s Tsao Chia Yi 6-1, 6- 3.
She next faces eighth- seeded Makato Ohara after the Japanese defeated 10th seed Muskan Gupta from India 6-2, 6-2.
Priska is joined by compatriot Janice Tjen, the fifth seed who beat ninth seed from Chinese Taipei Li Yu-Yun 6-2, 6- 4. The second seed Shivani Amineni of India tamed 16th seed from China Zhao Xichen 6-2, 7- 6 (5) to book her ticket in the quarterfinals.
Other quarterfinalists are Chinese Taipei’s Fang Wei Ning, Sim Chae Hyun of South Korea and Sheena Jade Masuda Karrasch of Hong Kong.
The doubles matches were unable to proceed due to a light shower at 1.05pm, followed by a heavy downpour at 2.40pm.
