SJK Chung Hua Sungai Tapang wins Cardboard City Challenge
KUCHING: SJK Chung Hua Sungai Tapang beat 14 other competitors to win the ‘Cardboard City Challenge’, held in conjunction with the World Architecture Day and Global Cardboard Challenge 2018 yesterday.
The ‘Green Pyramid City’ entry earned the school RM1,000 and a trophy. Placing respective second and third were SJK Chung Hua Batu 7’s ‘Fantasy City’ and SJK Chung Hua No 5’s ‘Dream City’ entries – they took home RM700 and RM500, respectively, along with trophies.
Jointly organised by Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia Sarawak Chapter (PAMSC) and Intodesign Lab, the event was themed ‘Re-imagining the Future’ and the ‘Cardboard Pavilion’ competition was a new addition this year.
For the ‘Pavilion Installation’ competition, the winner was Limkokwing Institute of Creative Technology (Borneo Campus) which bagged RM1,000 and a certificate. The team comprised Chin Kuan We, Tiong Jing Jing and Hwong Yu Leong.
Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Central Youth secretary-general Milton Foo, who officiated at the prize presentation ceremony, said the competition was a good opportunity for youths to shape their dream of becoming architects and engineers.
“The event is a platform for creativity and innovation to shape the young minds. “Through construction play using cardboards and masking tapes, the children are able to design whatever building that they want with an open mind,” he said.
Organising chairman Ar Chai Si Yong from PAMSC said the event aimed to influence and instil in children the creativity from a young age, as well as to make them realise the importance of handson practice and constructing that could give better realisation to scale, space, form and functions in relation to architecture.
Three hundred primary school pupils and 150 college and university architectural students took part in the competition.
