SERIAN: A man has been arrested on suspicion of stealing metal items from a Pan Borneo Highway construction site near here.

District police chief DSP Aswandy Anis said the suspect was handed over to police early Saturday following a pursuit that ended at Mile 16 of Kuching- Serian Road at 12.35am.

“A security personnel at the construction site, located near the Batang Sadong Bridge, spotted an individual stealing T25-type metal bars before escaping into a van.

“The security personnel then contacted the site supervisor’s relative, who pursued the suspect and managed to apprehend him at Mile 16 of Kuching- Serian Road,” he said in a statement.

According to Aswandy, police patrollers arrived at the scene upon being notified. They later took custody of the suspect, and also seized the van as evidence.

The van, he added, contained 17 metal bars – each measuring about 4m long – believed to have been stolen from the site.

“The suspect, a 37-year- old jobless man, is to be remanded pending further investigation under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft.”
