Rescuers temporaril­y suspend ops to find missing foreigner

MIRI: A foreigner, who is reported to have fallen off the Kuala Baram Express Wharf here on Tuesday, has yet to be found.

Fire and Rescue Department Miri chief Law Poh Kiong said the man had been identified as an Indian national, aged 25 and goes by the name ‘Azad’.

He added that the search and recovery ( SAR) mission to find the foreigner had to be suspended temporaril­y.

“After discussing with the police and the (Sarawak) Rivers Board, the operation has to be suspended – pending any new lead,” said Law in a press statement yesterday.

According to him, members of the SAR team had used the surface- search method around the site where the Indian was last seen.

“The rescuers have crossed the river over the span of 2km upstream, and 3km downstream. There is still no sign of the man,” he said.

It is learnt that the SAR team comprises four firefighte­rs from Lopeng station, led by senior officer II Luang Ganggang.
