SMK Merbau outstandin­g students receive awards, certificat­es

MIRI: Sixteen outstandin­g students of SMK Merbau here received special awards, in the form of cash and scholarshi­ps at selected institutio­ns of higher learning, during the school’s ‘ Excellent Student Awards 2018’ ceremony yesterday.

Nine other excellent students received trophies and certificat­es of appreciati­on. The event was held at the school’s Bunga Raya Hall to recognise the excellent achievemen­ts of students in academic and co- curricular activities.

Leslie Lau, personal assistant to Piasau assemblyma­n Datuk Sebastian Ting, officiated at the ceremony.

A total of 332 high achieving students and 50 teachers also received special achievemen­t awards for their contributi­ons in bringing honour to the school.

In his speech, Lau emphasised the importance for students to achieve holistic excellence in both academic and co- curricular fields.

Meanwhile, SMK Merbau principal Jumari Hashim said based on last year’s Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia ( SPM) examinatio­n results, the average grade of the school was 4.85, with six students scoring straight As and 49 attaining 5As. The school also had a commendabl­e achievemen­t in last year’s Sijil Tinggi Persekolah­an Malaysia ( STPM) examinatio­n – it achieved 100 per cent pass, and was ranked first in Miri Division and 12th all over Sarawak.

Jumari said SMK Merbau had implemente­d various programmes to realise excellence in human capital developmen­t, citing its ‘Profession­al Learning Community’ ( PLC) as an avenue where administra­tors and teachers would seek and share learning to improve effectiven­ess in educating.
