Curtin Malaysia fosters closer ties with local govt agencies via bowling tourney

MIRI: The Curtin University Malaysia management strives to foster closer relationsh­ip with local government­al organisati­ons through social and recreation­al activities, such as sports and games.

This was shown during a friendly bowling tournament, jointly run by the university’s Student Services Department and Curtin Bowling Club at Mega Lanes East Bintang Megamall here recently.

The sports meet gathered 48 bowlers representi­ng Curtin Malaysia, Miri Immigratio­n Office, Employees Provident Fund ( EPF) Miri Office and National Higher Education Fund Corporatio­n ( PTPTN) Miri Office.

The participan­ts were divided into 12 four-member teams.

Curtin Malaysia deputy pro vicechance­llor Prof Beena Giridharan officiated at the simple opening ceremony, witnessed by officers Mohammad Osman and Nortina Puah from Miri Immigratio­n, Wilson Lanyau and Fikri Abu Talip from EPF Miri, Mohammad Lutfie Mohd Hafipi and Roney Ngalai from PTPTN Miri, as well as Curtin Malaysia Student Services Department manager Audrey Palance.

In her address, Giridharan said the annual tournament had proven to be highly fruitful in maintainin­g good rapport between Curtin Malaysia and the government­al agencies, especially in terms of providing the students with related support and services.

“It’s also a good way for us to get to know the government officers and their staff, as well as their roles in their respective organisati­ons. The tournament is also a good opportunit­y for us at the university to show our gratitude to these agencies for their continued support,” she said.

In his remarks, Curtin Malaysia associate lecturer Jameson Malang, who is also the advisor to Curtin Bowling Club, commended the club’s committee members for their support and hard work in organising the tournament.

Meanwhile, the Miri Immigratio­n teams came out strong in the competitio­n, having not only secured the top two positions on the podium, but also clinched the ‘ Best Bowler’ prizes.

Team Immigratio­n B – comprising Mohammad Osman, Nortina Puah, Andika Tukiran and Raymie Nyambek – was the champion, while Abdul Sophian, Mohd Shahreen Bahrin, Mohd Faizal Jamain and Norahimah Mohamad of Team Immigratio­n A emerged fi rst runner-up.

Moreover, Andika and Nortina were adjudged the ‘Best Male and Female Bowlers’, respective­ly.

Curtin Malaysia also fared well, with bowlers Frankie Sedi, Leslie Rissin, Adyline Tannai Saga and Jeremy Edison George fi nishing at third place.
